What is candle pouring?

A way of making that feels slow on purpose.

Candle pouring is the craft of turning warm liquid wax and a few drops of fragrance into something you'll light for months. You melt, you measure, you blend a scent, you pour, and then you wait for it to set. It's part chemistry, part perfume-making, part patience.

Walk in with a mood in mind, cozy, fresh, nostalgic, and walk out two hours later with a finished candle in a vessel you chose, scented with a blend that's yours alone. Beginner-friendly, calming in practice, and genuinely useful in the result.

No two blends smell alike. That's the whole point.

A short history

From tallow and beeswax to your bedside table.

Candles aren't new. For most of human history they were the only way to hold back the dark. The version you'll pour at Artis House belongs to a very new moment, a quiet revival of craft, slowed down and made welcoming again.

013000 BCE · Egypt & Rome

The first portable flame.

Egyptians soak reeds in animal fat to make rushlights; Romans roll wicks in tallow to carry fire from room to room. For the first time, light can travel, and the evening no longer ends at sunset.

02Middle Ages · Europe

Candlemaking becomes a guild craft.

Beeswax burns clean and sweet where tallow smoked and stank, so it lights cathedrals and courts. Traveling chandlers go house to house, and candlemaking earns its own guilds, a trade with secrets worth keeping.

031850s · Industrial Europe

The modern candle is born.

Chemists distill paraffin from petroleum and refine stearin from fats, waxes that are cheap, bright, and consistent. Mechanical molds turn candlemaking into an industry, and the candle becomes something every household owns.

The slow-scent revival.

Soy and coconut waxes and a new love of small-batch scent send candlemaking home again, natural, expressive, personal. Studios like ours open so you can blend a fragrance and pour a candle without turning your kitchen into a workshop.

What you'll do in the session

Five steps. Two hours. One candle.

No experience assumed. No homework. Your artisan stays with you through the full arc, and a little technology does the heavy lifting so you can focus on the making.

Every session pairs the Artis House Hub, your live guide on your phone, with the Candle Craft Scent Builder, an AI blending tool grounded in real fragrance chemistry. You design digitally, then pour by hand. Technology sets the recipe; you make the candle.

01Arrive

Settle in and open the Hub.

Your artisan greets you and gets you settled, then you scan into the Artis House Hub on your phone, your live companion for the visit. It holds your session agenda, a step-by-step guide, and the design tools you'll use next.

AI meets perfumery
02Design

Blend your scent in the Scent Builder.

At your station, you'll open the Candle Craft Scent Builder on the studio tablet. Pick three oils from our live fragrance library, or just describe a mood, and the tool balances your top, heart, and base notes, explains the cold and hot throw, and even designs a custom label. It's perfumery logic, made playful.

Your artisan reads the recipe off the screen and sets out exactly those oils. Nothing is guesswork; everything is yours.

03Melt

Choose your vessel, melt the wax.

Pick a vessel, clear glass, matte tin, or a ceramic tumbler, then weigh out natural soy-coconut wax and melt it in the pouring pitcher. We watch the temperature together and, if you like, tint it with a little colour.

⏱ 20 minutes
04Pour

The steady pour. Center the wick.

When the wax hits the right temperature, we stir in your fragrance blend to the exact load the Scent Builder recommended, then pour in one slow, steady stream. You set the wick dead-centre and hold it while the surface begins to firm. Most guests say this is the calmest they've felt all week.

05Finish

Label it, save it, take it home.

We top off the surface for a clean finish and trim the wick while you apply the custom label your Scent Builder designed. Your blend recipe is saved to your account through the Hub, so you can reorder it, share it, or recreate it next visit. A short cure and it's ready to burn.

Tools of the trade

Six tools you'll meet, all provided.

You don't need to know any of these by name when you walk in. By the time you walk out, they'll feel natural in your hands.

The hero

Pouring pitcher

A spouted metal jug that melts the wax and lays down a clean, controlled pour. Beginner-friendly weight and balance.

The canvas

Your vessel

Clear glass, matte tin, or a ceramic tumbler. Pre-cleaned and warmed so the wax sets smooth against the sides.

The medium

40+ fragrance oils

Skin-safe, phthalate-free fragrance and essential oils across every family. Blend as few or as many as you like.

The precision

Thermometer

Wax has a sweet spot for adding scent and pouring. We watch it together so your candle sets without sinkholes or frost.

The bond

Wick & wick bar

Cotton or crackling wood wicks, held dead-centre by a bar across the rim while the wax firms up around them.

The polish

Wax flakes & finish

Natural soy-coconut flakes melt low and clean. A final top-off pass gives your candle a smooth, level surface.

Common questions

Things first-timers ask.

Click any question to expand. Don't see yours? Reach out, we read every email.

Do I really need zero experience?

Yes, most of our guests have never made a candle before. The session is built for absolute first-timers, and your artisan paces with you. By the end you'll have blended a scent, poured the wax, and set your own wick.

How big is the candle I'll make?

The standard pour fills an 8–10 oz vessel, a generous candle with 40+ hours of burn time. Larger vessels and multi-wick candles are available on request for an additional fee.

Can I create my own custom scent?

Absolutely, that's the heart of the session. You'll blend from our library of 40+ fragrance and essential oils, and we record your recipe on a card so you can order it again or recreate it at home.

What should I wear?

Comfortable clothes you don't mind a stray drop of wax on. Closed-toe shoes are required for safety around hot wax. Aprons are provided, and long hair should be tied back.

Do I take the candle home the same day?

Yes. Your candle firms up during the session and we box it for the trip home. Give it a short cure, a day or two on a shelf, for the best scent throw, then trim the wick and enjoy.

How many people fit in one session?

Two to eight guests for an open session. Private bookings (couples, groups, corporate, showers) can be arranged for larger parties. Tell us your group size when you book and we'll pair you with the right room.

Is it kid-friendly?

Children 12 and up can join with a parent or guardian present. We work with hot wax and an open heat source, so safety briefings happen for every guest, and younger children aren't a fit for this experience.

What's your cancellation policy?

Cancel or reschedule for free up to 48 hours before your session. Within 48 hours, we offer a credit for a future session. No-shows forfeit the booking. Life happens, message us and we'll work something out.
