About Artis House

Set your inner
artisan free.

We're a hands-on craft studio in Calgary where anyone, first-timers included, can spend an afternoon making something real with their own two hands, and carry it home the same day.

What’s in a name

A house of craft.

ar·tis
/ˈar.tis/ Latinnoungenitive of ars
  1. of art
  2. of skill, of craft
  3. of a trade, learned by practice and mastered with care
ars, artis  f., third declension

Artis is Latin, the form of ars that means “of art” or “of skill.” Artis House is, quite literally, a house of craft.

To the Romans, ars was never just painting or music. It was any practical skill that took training and practice to master. Tufting, lacing, pouring and painting all belong to it, and every one is learned the same way: with your own two hands.

ars
Nominative
art, skill
artis
Genitive
of art, of skill

Ars gratia artis

“Art for the sake of art.”

Our word in its most famous setting: the motto beneath MGM’s roaring lion.

Ars longa, vita brevis

“Craft takes long to master; life is short.”

From the Latin rendering of the physician Hippocrates. Which is why every session here is guided from start to finish.

A family of words

One root, two branches.

The stem art- grew into dozens of everyday English words. Most of them are about making things. A few are about being clever.

Our story

Craft, slowed down and made welcoming.

Artis House began with a simple idea: making things by hand is good for us, and almost nobody gets to do it anymore. Somewhere between busy schedules and glowing screens, the pleasure of a slow, tactile afternoon got lost.

So we built a studio around it. Tuft a rug, pour a candle, paint a pair of shoes, bring a resin sculpture to life, each experience is guided start to finish, needs zero experience, and ends with a finished piece you actually keep.

No pressure to be an artist. No wrong way to do it. Just good materials, patient guidance, a warm drink, and a couple of hours that feel like yours. That's the whole point.

What we believe

A few things we hold to.

Everyone's an artisan

Our sessions are built for absolute beginners. If you can hold a brush, you can make something you're proud of, we pace right alongside you.

Slow on purpose

The magic is in the hours, not the rush. We design every experience to feel unhurried, present, and quietly satisfying.

You take it home

Every session ends with a finished piece in your hands the same day, a rug, a candle, a pair, a sculpture. Yours to keep, or to give.

The experiences

Four ways to make something.

Pick the craft that's calling you, each one is a guided, all-materials-included session.
