Also called: tufting, gun tufting

What is rug tufting?

In short

Rug tufting is making a rug by punching yarn through a tightly stretched backing cloth, so loops of yarn stand proud on the front. A handheld tufting gun drives a hollow needle that either leaves each loop intact or cuts it. The back is then sealed with adhesive so nothing can pull out, and a secondary backing is added.

How a tufting gun actually works

The gun has a hollow needle and a motor. Yarn runs down through the needle, the motor punches the needle through the backing cloth over and over, and a mechanism at the tip decides what happens to the yarn on the other side, it either holds the loop or slices it.

Two things surprise almost everyone on their first go. The first is that the gun has no yarn feed of its own: it can only pull yarn that is already unwinding freely, which is why the yarn comes off a cone rather than a ball. The second is that it does not steer like a sewing machine. It tufts in the direction the nose is pointing, so to turn a corner you rotate the whole gun rather than the cloth.

Cut pile and loop pile

  • Cut pile: a blade cuts each loop as it forms, leaving two yarn ends standing up. Soft, plush, velvety, and forgiving: small irregularities disappear into the texture. It is also the only finish you can carve into.
  • Loop pile: the loops are left whole, giving a firmer, more graphic, harder wearing surface, the look of Berber carpet. It is less forgiving, because uneven spacing and wobbly lines have nowhere to hide.

Beginners are almost always steered to cut pile, for the forgiveness rather than the look.

Why the frame matters more than the gun

The backing cloth is stretched onto a frame edged with carpet tack strips, and it needs to be genuinely drum-tight, flick it and it should sound like a drum. This is not a detail. If the cloth is slack the needle drags it instead of piercing it, yarn pulls straight back out, and the fabric eventually tears. Most first-session frustration traces back to tension rather than technique, which is why tension gets rechecked as you work.

Finishing: the part nobody photographs

A tufted piece is not finished when the tufting stops. Adhesive is worked into the yarn roots on the back while the piece is still under tension, locking every tuft in place. Once that has set, a secondary backing goes over it to hide the underside and protect the glue, and the raw edge is bound so it cannot fray. Skip the adhesive and you do not have a rug, you have yarn resting in a cloth.

A note on the word "hand-tufted". In the rug trade, hand-tufted means made with a handheld gun on a frame. It is not the same as hand-knotted, which is a far slower and more expensive construction. Both are made by hand; they are different crafts, and the price gap between them is not a scam.

Good to know

Questions people actually ask

Is rug tufting hard to learn?

The trigger technique takes most people about fifteen minutes. The genuinely hard parts are keeping the cloth under tension, holding the gun flat against the backing, and the weight of the machine in your hands after an hour, none of which are skills so much as things you get used to.

Do I need any experience to try it?

No. Every Artis House session is built for people who have never held a tufting gun, and an artisan stays with you throughout rather than starting you off and leaving.

What is the difference between tufting and punch needle?

A tufting gun is motorised and fast; a punch needle is a hand tool you push through the fabric one stitch at a time. Both can make loops, and both can be sheared into cut pile, the common claim that one makes loops and the other makes cut pile is not accurate.

Can you wash a tufted rug?

Spot-clean it rather than putting it in a machine. The adhesive layer that holds the tufts in is not designed for a wash cycle, and soaking it is the fastest way to shorten the rug's life.

Try it with the gun in your hands

Reading about tufting only gets you so far, the trigger makes sense about ninety seconds in. Our sessions run from zero experience, and you leave with the rug.
